Steve Johnson, battling his way through cramps, was able to overtake Thomaz Bellucci to capture the title in Houston over the weekend.
Johnson – the 2014 RBC Tennis Championships of Dallas singles champion – had a busy past few weeks after playing in Miami then going to Australia for Davis Cup before coming into the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston. But despite the fatigue, the American was able to hold on for the 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) win over the 8-seeded Brazilian.
After achieving his first career victory in his fifth attempt against Fernando Verdasco (6-2, 6-4) in the quarterfinals, Johnson went on to defeat fellow American Jack Sock in three sets to setup the finals showdown against Bellucci.
The win marked Johnson’s second career ATP singles title.
